This training equips you to safely operate airplanes with engines over 200 horsepower, giving you the knowledge and confidence to handle increased speed, climb performance, and advanced systems. It’s an essential milestone for pilots looking to expand their flying opportunities and advance toward more complex aircraft.

Rental

Take to the skies in N5165M, a well-maintained, reliable R model Cessna 172 available for rental at Northwoods Aviation. Perfect for training, time-building, or recreational flying, this airplane offers the performance and dependability you need to log hours with confidence. Highlights include a 180 HP engine, Garmin 530 avionics, and a Bendix/King KAP 14 autopilot—making N5165M an excellent platform for both students and licensed pilots. With flexible scheduling and competitive rates, it’s ready when you are.

Instrument rating

Expand your skills and freedom as a pilot by earning your instrument rating. With this advanced certification you’ll gain the ability to safely navigate through clouds and Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC), reducing weather-related delays and keeping you flying more often.

Requirements 

  • Hold a Private Pilot Certificate

  • Pass a written exam

  • 15hrs of training with an instructor

  • 50 hours of Pilot in Command (PIC) cross country

  • 40 hours of simulated or actual instrument conditions

  • A cross country of at least 250 nautical miles with 3 approaches on a filed flight plan

Must be 17 years of age

Pass a written exam

40 hours of flight time
(20 with an instructor)

3 hours of Night Flying

3 hours of instrument training

10 hours of solo flying
(5 hours must be cross country)

Northwoods Aviation is a Part 61 flight school. "Simple Flying" explains this best:

“Part 61 is about flexibility and allows you much more control over your individual flight training experience. You’ll be working with an instructor who will custom design a course tailored to you. They’ll be in charge of which lessons you’re doing and which order based on your specific goals and needs. This allows for a lot more flexibility in your schedule and is perfect for someone trying to work a job or go to school and go through their flight training simultaneously.”

Private Pilot Certificate Requirements

Commercial Certificate

Are you ready to make money flying? With a Commercial Pilot Certificate, you can turn your passion for aviation into a career. This certification allows you to be paid for your flying skills, opening the door to jobs such as flight instruction, charter flying, aerial survey, and more.

Requirements 

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Hold a Private Pilot certificate

  • Pass a written exam

  • 250 hours of flight time which includes a minimum of:

  • 100 hours of which must be in powered aircraft, and 50 must be in airplanes.

  • 100 hours of pilot-in-command time, 50 of which must be in airplanes.

  • 50 hours of cross-country time, 10 of which must be in an airplane.

  • 20 hours of training, including 10 of instrument, 10 of complex or TAA, and a minimum of 2 cross-countries (day and night) which are 100NM one-way

  • 10 hours of solo training, including a cross-country and night hours
